Spotlight on John Holmstrom

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

In 1975 in New York it was ground-zero for the punk explosion and there at the center of it all was John Holmstrom and PUNK magazine. John co-founded, edited, designed, and hand-lettered (!!!) that influential magazine as well as doing comics and illustrations for it. John even created fumetti (photo comics) for PUNK, including "Mutant Monster Beach Party" which featured appearances by Debbie Harry (Blondie), Joey Ramone, Andy Warhol, and other noted figures from the New York alt-art scenes. The Ramones supported PUNK and John returned the favor by drawing classic album covers for them. As Wikipedia says, "Holmstrom's work became the visual representation of the punk era." Post PUNK, John has continued to be a prolific cartoonist, artist, designer, writer, and editor. Of course, when Hugh Brown was putting together the Weird Tales of the Ramones project, he had to include John's work in the included comic. (John will be interviewed by Batton Lash, with whom he attended art-school and discussed Steve Ditko back when they were just starting out on their career paths in New York.)
